Description

Gymnastics manuscript of Adolf Stempel. The notebook gives highly detailed and numbered instructions on gymnastic excercises, movements and floor routines to be performed, information on various events and competitions in London, namely at the Orion gymnasium, the Bow and Bromley Institute as well as the Forest School and Goldburn House. The notebook also includes several intricate diagrams for the excercises.

Inserted in to the notebook are various miscellaneous papers including the competition criteria for two competitions at the Mill Hill, Forest, and Goldburn House schools, callisthenics drills and diagrams, the draft and final copy of floor plan for gymnastics stage in the Bow and Bromley Institute.

Biographical note

Adolf Stempel worked as a 'master for gymnastics (medical or otherwise), fencing callisthenics and drilling and importer of gymnastic apparatus' in Finsbury Park, London, and worked for twelve years as the assistant master to the German gymnastic society and ten years as master of the Ladies class. His gymnastic methods were used in the teaching of gymnastics once the subject was added to the national curricula.
