Description

Lord Phillips, who died in 1999, talks to Dr. Max Blythe about his life and work in a series of six interviews [of which parts 3 - 6 are held by the MFVL]. Throughout the series he refers to the works of many of the leading scientists of the time. In part 3 he discusses x-ray crystallography, protein crystallography, and the work on sperm whale myoglobin by John Kendrew and his team at Cambridge. In part 4 he talks about the discovery of the structure and enzyme mechanism of lysozyme. Part 5 concentrates principally on the years he spent in Oxford as Professor of Biophysics (1966-1989). In part 6 he describes his involvement in Government funding of UK science research, in particular his roles as Chairman of the Cell Biology and Disorders Board of the MRC, 1974-76, and as Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Research Councils; and his Royal Society appointments.
