‘I Long for Silence’ by Gawain Hewitt uses sound to explore how a hospital feels. It was one of a series of artworks created for the ‘Sensing Spaces of Healthcare’ exhibition. The exhibition was part of the ‘Sensing Spaces of Healthcare’ project (January 2020 - January 2027), which rethought NHS hospitals through a focus on sensory experiences. The project was led by Dr Victoria Bates, University of Bristol, and delivered in partnership with Fresh Arts - North Bristol NHS Trust, and GOSH Arts - Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. The exhibition was devised and led by Dr Rebecka Fleetwood-Smith, supported by Sofie Layton, and GOSH Arts and Fresh Arts. The exhibition showed at University College London, Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, Link Gallery, April 2023 – July 2023, and at Maternity Department, Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, August 2023 – January 2024. 'Sensing Spaces of Healthcare' was funded by Dr Victoria Bates’ UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship MR/S033793/1.
