About this work

Description

Anabaptists: part of the radical wing of the Reformation, consisting of preachers and congregations in the tradition of medieval mysticism and millenarianism who believed that Luther and Zwingli had stopped halfway towards reform by compromising with existing governments and churches. The fanatical violence and sexual heterodoxy of the Siege of Münster in 1536 gave Anabaptism a bad name, and as this print shows, does not put matricide past them.

Physical description

1 print : etching, with engraving ; image 14.7 x 14.6 cm

Lettering

Quackerischer Mutter-mord. So ist der Muttermord den Schwermern auch gemein, / es muss des Geistes Trieb auch hier der Vorwand seyn? / Der Sünde Original wil dieser Sohn verderben, / so muss die Mutter selbst von seinen Händen sterben. The lettering in German states that the son's matricide is an attempt to revoke original sin
