To those of them who have already fa- voured me with valuable communications, I beg to return my most grateful thanks. The introductory account of the opi- nions of physiologists respecting the nature and uses of the nervous system, though received with indulgence by the learned body to which it was read, is necessarily superficial; for it would have been impos- sible for me, consistently with my plan, to have entered deeply into a consideration of the great variety of matter which that account embraces : but I have endeavoured to supply its deficiencies by references to the best writers on the subject, and I flat- ter myself that they will be found correct.
