Notes

The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "They were members of the 56th (London) Division concert party, called Bow Bells, which was particularly active on the French front from 1916. This was a particularly well-organized concert party, and in Harold Chapman, shown on this card, they had a star on their hands. He was extremely popular and attractive in drag; all the more surprising for his having a baritone voice. He is seen here wearing a long blonde plaited wig, and extremely elaborate high-laced and heeled boots of the type popularised by the French revue star Gaby Deslys. His partner Mark Leslie is seen here in black-face and light suit influenced by the music hall star G.H. Elliot."
