About this work

Description

The Lebanon Hospital for the Insane, (later the Lebanon Hospital for Mental Diseases), Asfuriyeh, near Beirut, Syria, was founded by the Quaker Theophilus Waldemeir in 1910. It was supported partly by patients’ fees but also by subscriptions and donations. The affairs of the hospital were controlled by a General Committee in London and an Executive Committee in Beirut. There were Auxiliary Committees in the United States, Switzerland, and Holland. Dr Bedford Pierce was a Trustee and was also Secretary and Treasurer for the collection of subscriptions in Yorkshire. The latter role was later taken on by his successor as Medical Superintendent at The Retreat, Dr Yellowlees. These papers contain much information about the hospital and its support and management in this country
