About this work

Description

The King is wearing his night-clothes. Cornet George Joyce enters the room with other soldiers. His rank of cornet was the lowest commissioned rank in the army. "The cornet and his force reached Holmby and took control on 3 June 1647, but the subsequent decision to move Charles was forced on Joyce by those he was leading, after they had seized Holmby and Graves had escaped to London. Although Fairfax was said to have wanted him to be court martialled, no action was ever taken against Joyce. In view of later accusations against him, the evidence suggests that he had addressed the king respectfully and had treated him with consideration." (Oxford dictionary of national biography)
