Description

These papers are mainly concerned with Emily Beke's financial circumstances and attempts to win further recognition for her husband. Correspondents include statesmen, scholars, churchmen and others to whom Emily turned for support. There are also letters from Henry Marcus Coghlan on Abyssinia, and from Edward Bond (1815-1898), Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, about the purchase of Beke's papers in 1877. Associated papers include an unpublished review of Richard Burton's The gold mines of Midian and the ruined Midianite cities (London, 1878), by Emily Beke.
