About this work

Description

This x-ray shows multiple translucent circular shapes in the right upper zone. This is plombage. Structures similar to table tennis balls were surgically placed in the apical pleural space in order to collapse an upper lobe infected with miliary tuberculosis. This surgical procedure was an alternative to thoracoplasty before the advent of antituberculous drug treatment. Artificial pneumothoraces (injecting air into the pleural space) and phrenic nerve crushes were also performed.
