About this work

Description

Groups of 35mm colour slides (unless otherwise stated) found stored in commercially supplied plastic slide boxes.

These appear to have been used for lectures or talks, etc., being accumulations of various slides (mostly taken by Browne) brought together for the purposes of the topic or subject. Many non-clinical images are included in this series. They cover a period spanning the 1950s to the 1970s and therefore incorporate Browne's work in Congo as well as Nigeria, plus foreign visits before and after he returned to the UK (1966)

Descriptions and covering dates reflect (verbatim) the information written on them by Browne. Dates may not be comprehensive.

A subject was sometimes written on the outside of the box, but it is not always certain if information on the box actually related to the contents. Additionally, it is uncertain whether being contained in the same box necessarily indicated a connection between the entire contents. It is obvious that some slides had become jumbled up over time. Several boxes were unlabelled and many of the slides have identifying numbers on them whose meaning is now lost. Many of the slides are not labelled.

Key to some abbreviations in slide labelling: BL = Borderline Leprotamous TM = Tuberculoid Macular MT = Macular Tuberculoid Uz. = Uzuakoli Itu. = ?Itu-Agon, Lagos, Nigeria R = Right L = Left

Publication/Creation

1950s-1970s

Physical description

19 files Many of the boxes were in a poor condition and some of the slides dirty, faded or falling apart. The contents of each box have been transferred to archival A4 Secol sleeve/s and assigned an item number.

Arrangement

No attempt has been made to put images into 'order', information is translated directly from physical arrangement. There is evidently some duplication within the series and compared to other series in Section K (there are several Kodak duplicates).

Biographical note

Series K.5 added to the collection in Dec 2006
