Broadbent (in middle of back row) and Dobie (middle of front row) are identified in inscriptions on the verso of the mount. The identity of Dobie is confirmed by comparison with the painting of him by Ouless which is reproduced in the Brit. med. J., 1915, vol. 1, p. 533. Both of them studied in Paris, but apparently not at the same time (Dobie before 1855, Broadbent from 1857). Both had connections with north-west England (Dobie practised in Chester, Broadbent was apprenticed and trained in Manchester). The stamp of J.G. Tunny is printed on one corner of the photograph: James Good Tunny (1820-1887) practised as a photographer in Edinburgh ca. 1850-1887

Broadbent became physician to Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V, and a baronet
