Biographical note
Fraser had originally wanted to study Classics when he went to Winchester College but two years after going there, at the age of 14, he switched to science, including mathematics, at the wish of his father who wanted him to enter the medical profession.
His knowledge of the classical civilisations, his linguistic abilities, together with a broad interest in history came together in his extensive use of quotations to illustrate his talks and correspondence.
