About this work

Description

This documentary follows two families who conceive a child to save the life of an already existing sick child. Four-year-old Dave has fanconi anaemia, a rare condition in which bone marrow failure is inevitable. He will need a bone marrow transplant from a sibling who is a perfect match. Dave's parents, Tom and Alison, have not found a bone marrow match for Dave and so, using complex IVF treatments, they have decided to attempt to have a baby with a matching bone marrow profile. Three-year-old Alex suffers from the same condition as Dave and his family want to follow the same path as Dave's family, especially as their previous child, Jessica, died from the same condition. However, Alex's parents, Samantha and David, do not have enough money to pay for the treatment so appeal to the NHS for financial help; they are refused. Dave's parents were refused NHS help and are funding the treatment themselves. These kinds of treatment come up against harsh criticism for producing 'spare parts' babies but both families defend their position in this regard. The process of Alison's in vitro treatment is shown in detail although, unfortunately, she goes through repeated failures. After a year of appeals Samantha and David are accepted for IVF treatment.
