Six deaths from diphtheria and five from fever were registered in the Grays sub-district of the Orsett Registration District in the third quarter of 1889. The population of the sub-district in 1881 was 10,485 ; in 1871 it was 7,042. At the present time it may be estimated at about 15,350, of which the Grays Thurrock Urban District contains about 10,000. Taking the population of the sub-district at the beginning of 1885 at 12,700, it appears that the average annual death-rate from diphtheria during the ten years 1880-89 has been about 0*38 per 1,000, and that from fever 0* 32. From the Supplement to the 45th Annual Report of the Registrar-General it is seen that during the decade 1871-80, in the whole Orsett Registration District, the average death-rate from diphtheria was 0'17 per 1,000, and that from fever (including typhus, enteric, and simple continued fever), 0'56. It may be noted, for comparison, that during the decade 1871-80 the average death-rate from diphtheria for the whole of England and Wales was 0*12, and that from fever 0*48. But during the last ten years 1880-89, the fever death-rate has steadily fallen from 0*32 to 0*18, while the diphtheria death-rate has almost as steadily risen from 0*10 to 0*19. Taking the single year LS89, the Grays sub-district has suffered a mortality of 0'52 per 1,000 from fever and 084 from diphtheria, against corresponding death-rates of 0*18 and 0*19 for the country at large.
