This programme is a fictional account of what happens when a 24-year-old woman, Anna, who has learning difficulties, develops a sexual relationship with Richard, a young man with Down's syndrome. Can someone with learning difficulties consent to sex or will their lack of knowledge about what they're doing always make it tantamount to abuse? The issue of consent is taken to court when Anna becomes pregnant and after an illegal abortion organised by her mother is advised to be surgically sterilised. The mother will not consent to the surgery and the court rules in favour of the mother. Although all the characters in the drama are actors, the doctors, psychiatrists and barristers are all real and the outcome is decided by a real QC.
