About this work

Description

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) causes numerous fluid-filled cysts to accumulate in the kidney tissue. Eventually, the cysts compromise the structure and function of the kidneys, resulting in chronic kidney disease. Three gene mutations have been linked with PKD (PKD1, PKD and PKDHD1), of which there are two types: autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive, depending on the mode of inheritance of the disease. PKD affects all races, and both men and women equally. PKD cysts can lead to further complications including high blood pressure, brain and heart blood vessel defects, and the development of cysts in the liver.
