Is seeing believing?.

Microscopy, by enabling the scientist to understand the structure of cells, led the way to an understanding of their function. This film describes the advances made by Camillo Golgi (1843-1926), Nobel Prize-winner in Medicine or Physiology (1906), whose microscopy led him to an understanding of the structure of the nervous system and whose staining techniques clarified his perception of the function of cells. Instruction is given in the preparation of samples for the microscope and in viewing them. Prof. Don Northcote (University of Cambridge) talks about the Cavendish Laboratory's early electron microscopy and describes the breakthrough achieved by embedding techniques which made it possible to examine cross sections of samples.
