Biographical note

The Aids Unit was set up within the Department of Health (South Africa) c.1988 in response to the developing HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. It aimed to raise awareness and promote preventative measures. John Wilson Carswell, a Scottish physician, was medical advisor to the AIDS Unit. The Unit was closed down and replaced by the National AIDS Programme c.1991.
