About this work

Description

Death is an optional extra: A documentary series examining the problems and inconsistencies of modern medicine in historical and worldwide perspective. Reviews the history of health care in America and shows how the frontier spirit lives on in a dramatic response to medical emergencies while chronic needs remain unsatisfied. The high cost of health insurance and the faith of practitioners and patients in technology mean that the rich are often over-treated - to the point where it would seem that death is indeed "an optional extra" - while the poor only get treatment when on the brink of death.
