About this work

Description

A large annual plant up to one metre high. Has irregular pointed leaves and single trumpet flower of white or purple. The fruits are green spiny ovals which split when ripe to reveal crinkled black seeds. All parts poisonous. Plant ingestion can lead to death. Contains alkaloids daturine, atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine. Titrated fluid extract has been used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and in laryngitis. Is the source of hyoscyamine which has been used for asthma relief. As N0021559C - 61C. Close-up of developing green spiky seed head.
