Biographical note

The first Cafe Scientifique meeting was held in Leeds in 1998 and was run by Duncan Dallas. Cafe Scientifique was based on the French Cafe Philsophique model. Funding from the Wellcome Trust enabled the employment of Tessa Anderson to help people across the UK set up their own Cafes in towns and cities. Thirty Cafes existed in the UK by 2004.The British Council also adopted the Cafe Sci idea, creating a global distribution of cafes. A conference bringing together international Cafe Sci organisers was held in 2007 in Leeds funded by a Wellcome Trust People Award.

Between 2008 and 2012 funding was received from the Wellcome Trust through Society Awards to develop junior cafes in schools in the UK. Between 2008 and 2014 funding was received to develop adult cafes and cafes in schools in Uganda coordinated by Betty Kituye.
