    pounds each. They will purify from six to seventy-two gallons of water per day. If you have no filters, all suspected water should be purified by adding two or three drops of Condy's fluid (which will be found in the medicine chest) to each gallon of water. Yellow Fever.—The following general rules have been recently published by the Board of Trade relative to the prevention of this disease. (1) Do not moor or anchor, if it can be avoided, at the mouths of rivers. (2) Do not ballast your vessel from the beach. (3) Look particularly to the cleanliness of fore- castles and deckhouses. If the fever appears among the crew, make for the nearest port as quickly as possible, in order to procure medical aid, and follow out, meanwhile, the directions given above. Much illness of various kinds will be prevented by seeing that your men are exposed to the influence of rain and tropical sun as little as possible, that they have tea or coffee and biscuit directly after turning- out, and that a fair time is always allowed for meals, and for the maintenance of proper cleanliness both as to body and berths.
