About this work

Description

Greatrakes was renowned for curing the sick by stroking them with his hands. He is shown stroking the left eye and head of a sick boy. In the right background, an unrolled notice suspended on a wall, with rollers, replaces the scene shown in Faithorne's engraving: the notice is inscribed "Nathaniel [sic] Greatrakes Anno Domini 1668"
