About this work

Description

The ceremony (Kathin Luang) at which the king donates new robes to the monks at the Wat Phra Chetuphon (Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Pho) in Bangkok. The ceremony photographed took place on Friday 13 October 1865. King Mongkut (King Rama IV) is carried shoulder high in a ceremonial chair (palanquin) past genuflecting crowds outside the temple. Some of those attending are looking round at Thomson. The same ceremony is shown in Thomson's negatives numbered 606 and 607. For further details see Paisarn Piemmettawat, loc. cit.
