    Considerable progress lias been made in tlie enlargement of the farm buildings, which, to prove efficient, require further extension. Piggeries have been erected, and other alterations made by the patients at a greatly diminished cost to the Asylum. The resignation, in July last, of Dr. Manley, one of the Assistant Medical Officers, after upwards of four years’ close attention to the discharge of his duties, led to the appointment of Dr. Watson. The remaining Officers are unchanged, and both they and Dr. Watson have performed their respective duties to the satisfaction of the Committee. During the year 174 Males and 146 Females have been admitted into the Asvlum ; 82 Males and 100 Females have been discharged therefrom, of whom 41 Males and 69 Females were cured; and 57 Males and 49 Females have died. The Asylum is capable of accommodating 1,000 patients, 500 of each sex, and is constantly full. Your Committee have for some time been negotiating with the Guardians of the Bolton Union, under the provisions of “ The Lunacy Acts’ Amendment Act, 1862,” sec. 8, as explained by the 2nd section of “The Lunacy Acts’ Amendment Act, 1863,” for the reception into the Workhouse of that Union of a limited number of harmless patients, chargeable to the County, and at present confined in the Asylum, so as to afford room in the Asylum for more hopeful and pressing cases.
