About this work

Description

Sue Lawley interviews Harry Kroto on Desert Island Discs. Prof. Kroto won the Nobel Prize for Chemisty in 1996 with his discovery of 'Buckyballs' - Buckminsterfullerenes - a third form of carbon. This led to a revolution in material science. He enjoyed art, worked in his father's balloon factory till he never wanted to see another balloon, loved meccano, and it was his interest in space which led to his Nobel Prize. He had seen how a geodesic dome can distribute forces evenly throughout the structure and he always visualizes chemistry in three dimensions.
