About this work

Description

Acquired as a portrait of "F.C. Goodwin M.D. by A. Rawlinson". A Francis Cornelius Goodwin, doctor of medicine, was living in Mosley Street, Manchester, in 1840 (Parish register of St Ann, Manchester, baptism of a child 20 September 1840). He had earlier matriculated at Caius College Cambridge on 1831 aged 19 (Venn, loc. cit.). A Francis Cornelius Goodwin, resident of Birkdale, was buried on 25 March 1867, aged 54 (Parish register of Holy Trinity, Southport, Lancs.). However the man mentioned in these three sources could not be the same man as the present sitter, as a mezzotint portrait of the same subject by W. Ward after J. Rawlinson was published much earlier, in 1819. The mezzotint, bears the legend "A. Goodwin M.D.", which may refer to the grandfather of F.C. Goodwin, who was Anthony Goodwin M.D., who died on 24 February 1819 (Memorial Inscriptions from Wirksworth Church, Churchyard and Cemetery). He is listed in the Universal British Directory 1791 as one of three surgeons or physicians for Wirksworth, Derbyshire. His will of 12 December 1818 does not mention a portrait or other painting (The National Archives, reference PROB 11/1615/191). If Anthony is the sitter, as appears likely, Francis Cornelius Goodwin would have been the owner of the painting, not its subject. Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Dales was a centre of lead mining and industrial weaving
