Description

Many refurbishment and redecoration works and general improvements were made at the Retreat in the 1890s. This file of papers includes detailed notes, all early 1890s, with some sketches, of proposed redecoration and minor alterations in various parts of the Retreat, including Belle Vue, the Lodge, East Villa, the Cottage Hospital as well as the main building; estimates and tenders for some of the works, including tender for new tank 1893, estimates for new range 1894, new range at Gainsborough House 1892, badminton sets 1894, outside painting 1893, new boilers 1893, cisterns, 1892, alterations to Engine House 1893, ventilation of West Villa 1892, new shed and fence 1893-4, new planting for garden (plants detailed) 1893, new drainage and garden landscaping of Ladies Airing Court 1894.
