Description
This programme reconstructs three days in the casualty department of The London Hospital in December 1906. We see how important and fearsome the hospital Matron was, how anaesthesia was applied, the earliest use of x-ray photography and the effects of the process on the radiologist, a boy with septic rat bites, surgery for a pneumothorax, how a suicide attempt was dealt with, a love affair between members of staff as well as how the hospital managed to help patients with no money 40 years before the advent of the NHS.
