Description

Baritone who created the role of Falstaff in Verdi's opera and Tonio in Pagliacci, and is said to have requested that Leoncavallo change the title from the singular Il pagliaccio to the plural Pagliacci, in order to broaden the title from one clown only (Canio) to the whole troupe including Tonio, Maurel's own role. Author of Le chant rénové par la science (Paris 1892), Un problème d'art (Paris 1893), and Dix ans de carrière: 1887-1897 (Paris 1897). Portrayed stepping over the borderline of the lithograph
