About this work

Description

The sitter was presumably known to Lord Duncannon (William Ponsonby, 2nd earl of Bessborough), who owned the drawing. He arrived in Rome on his Grand Tour in December 1736 and subsequently became a member of the Society of Dilettanti (J. Ingamells, ed., A dictionary of British and Irish travellers in Italy, 1701-1800 compiled from the Brinsley Ford archive, London 1997, p. 781)
