Description

Head of a bearded man directed to right: the head of Plato holding a volume of the Timaeus in the School of Athens by Raphael. Drawing accompanying the collection of drawings for J.C. Lavater, Essays on Physiognomy, trans. H. Hunter, London 1789-1798. An engraving of this drawing has not been identified in that book

Thomas Holloway (1748-1827) supervised the artwork for the English version of the book. This included re-engraving many of the works from the original German and French publications. This is one in a series of drawings prepared for the English version
