Biographical note

The trip subsequently called 'The Long Safari' was undertaken by Burkitt and two companions, Edward ('Ted') Williams and Cliff Nelson. Ted had worked for years in a mission hospital in Northern Uganda and Cliff had recently left a government appointment to run a mission hospital in Tanzania. All were friends. As well as camping equipment they took a cine camera, typewriter and a tape recorder. The trip attracted publicity which led to it appearing in Readers Digest and subsequently the subject of a book which was published in America under the title 'Mr Burkitt in Africa' but subsequently in England under the title 'The Long Safari'. The trip was to investigate the geographical incidence of lymphoma syndrome and the trio visited countries in East, Central and South Africa.
