About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced August 2024: Two black actors, one in drag, dance together on stage. Coloured process print, ca. 1903.

Description

The two men appear to be dancing with one another, one wearing a dress and hat, and holding an umbrella. The other man wears a top hat, a white shirt and black suit. His cane leans against the painted backdrop. This offset litho printed card would indicate that the image was sufficiently popular to be produced in large quantities

Jack Brown pictured here wearing drag, performed in a double act with Charles Gregory who introduced the Cake-Walk dance to Paris in 1902. Another item in the collection shows them pictured together (Wellcome Library no. 2044881i).
