This small group of papers relates to Middleton's military service in the Far East and incarceration in Changi jail. Included are case notes and x-rays of patients seen in Changi with maxillofacial injuries; talks and lectures given by Middleton on his war-time experiences; his war diary from No.1 Malaya General Hospital, Feb 1942; notes and publications and some images.

Biographical note

Colonel David S. Middleton RAMC (T.A.) was officer commanding No.1 Malaya General Hospital at the time of the capitulation of Singapore in the Second World War. He was subsequently interred in Changi jail. He was the only Consultant Anaesthetist in Changi Prisoner of War Camp Hospital and also advised on the treatment of maxillofacial casualties. This collection comprises papers that Col. Middleton brought back with him on his return from Changi after the war.

David Middleton qualified FRCS Ed. 1930; FDS RS Ed. 1951; FFD RCSI 1964. His career was chiefly as an anaesthetist and consulting or honorary dental or oral surgeon to a number of hospitals in Edinburgh, including the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Edinburgh Dental Hospital and the Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital. He was a member of the General Dental Council and member of a number of societies including the Oral Surgical Club.
