    < requisite to meet every emergency that may arise. The means m.ost effective may be generally found in the use of blisters, gentian, opii, vol. alkali, nitri, &c. not forgetting the advantages of tinct. ferri muriati, duly employed. As the perspirations in this disease are often so vio' lent and dangerous, their progress must be arrested, not only by medicine, but their approach must be checked by lessening the quantity of covering on the bed, or by arising, if the patient is able; and avoiding to take any hot liquids to increase or continue it. The patienc must never arise i?i a state of perspiration, but be/ore it begins, to prevent the effects of cold. The room, in which the patient sleeps, should be vacated during the day, if it can be done, for the pur- pose of its being yentilated by fresh air, and to pre- vent the respiration of a foul or impure atmosphere. The expectoration in this disease is generally sweet, salt, or bitter to the taste: and yellow, green, blue, white or black in appearance. It is viscid, opake, frothy, and sometimes streaked with blood, varying occasionally j and perhaps an attention to its peculiari- ty might considerably facilitate the removal of ob- scurity, as to its nature, qualities, Sec. respecting the disease. The amendment in this disease, under the treat- ment recommended, generally begins about the third or fourth day : its progress is usually regular and uni- form but sometimes it proceeds by alternate days of progression and sameness of station.
