Notes

The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Neon lights on the front of London's 'Victoria Palace' variety theatre, circa 1924, announce the rare appearance of the unique cross-dressing, gender-defying American aerialist Barbette. Born Vander Clyde in 1898 or 1899, his sensational career as trapeze artist and illusionist took him all over the world until his early retirement from performance in the 1930s. He continued as a choreographer and consultant on numerous film and theatre productions (including coaching Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis on female impersonation for the 1959 Hollywood film 'Some like it hot', before dying by his own hand in 1973."
This work is untitled: the title has been supplied by the cataloguer.
