About this work

Description

Presenters Dr Chris van Tulleken and Dr Xand van Tulleken join doctors and aid workers at the border crossings and refugee camps, where migrants are fleeing from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. They talk to patients and travelling refugees throughout the programme about their medical conditions and their experiences fleeing their home countries. First, the van Tullekens arrive in Lesbos. Xand visits volunteers patrolling a Southern coastal border, who are helping navigate smuggler’s boats towards safety. Meanwhile, Chris visits volunteers at a Northern coastal border, where one volunteer exhibits examples of unfit and dangerous life jackets given to migrants by Turkish smugglers. Chris and the volunteers meet passengers off of an incoming boat and look for signs of hypothermia. Meanwhile, Xand visits a team of international lifeguards that are patrolling the seas looking for boats experiencing difficulties. He then visits a Médecins Sans Frontières-run medical clinic at Moria Registration Camp. A volunteer explains the kinds of medical conditions they treat on a regular basis. Next, Xand visits the main port in Athens and a nearby medical camp, where many migrants arrive into Greece. Meanwhile, Chris visits a medical clinic run by Doctors of the World at a border camp in Macedonia. He also travels the route many migrants take to cross the border into Serbia, assisting migrants in sub-zero temperatures. In a medical clinic run by an Israeli charity, volunteer doctors list common medical conditions found in migrant patients. Next, Xand visits an MSF-run relief clinic at the Calais Jungle - a French refugee camp-cum-shanty town. He talks to an expert in public health volunteering at the camp about conditions in the Jungle. Meanwhile, Chris visits a longer-term medical clinic at the LaGeSo Registration centre in Berlin, and the former-airport Tempelhof, which is being used as an emergency detention centre. Next, Xand travels to a refugee camp near Dunkirk. Finally, the van Tullekens reunite at the end of their journey and discuss their experiences and their feelings towards how this crisis is being managed by EU authorities.
