About this work

Description

Die-cut magazine insert probably from the 1890s advertising Brooke's Monkey Brand Soap which was a detergent for general household use, famously not for washing clothes though. They advertised extensively, usually using a monkey character dressed and behaving as a human being. In this instance the insert is cut to the exact shape of the monkey who is wearing a top hat and dark, formal city suit with a sandwich board hanging from straps over his shoulders. There is a flap extending from his arm where the insert would have been bound into the magazine.
