"The recognition of thalidomide defects", Dublin 1974. Typescript, two copies, one of them "copy marked for slides" and with a list of slides used.

[Untitled], Thalidomide workshop, John Jamieson School, Leeds, 29 November 1975. Set of notecards for a workshop for parents of thalidomide adolescents.

"Deformity drugs: the science and the law", Southampton, 5 March 1980. Set of notecards.

"The Debendox story", Christ's College Medical Society, Cambridge, 21 October 1980. Set of notecards. Debendox was the name under which the American anti-nausea drug Bendectin was sold in the UK.

With Heather Clark, "Thalidomide children: how are they now?", Advanced Medicine Conference, Royal College of Physicians, London, February 1984. Two typescripts with instructions for slides, one for Smithells' own presentation, the other an autobiographical account by Heather Clark, a thalidomide adult.

"Thalidomide: lessons from the sixties", European Teratology Society 25th Conference, Cannes, France, 14-17 September 1997. Typescript with extensive handwritten insertions and additions. Includes abstract in the form of ten bullet points. Further includes a handwritten chronology of thalidomide 1958-1963, by Smithells, itself undated.

There is also some lecture preparation material, including a letter from W. Lenz discussing the alleged mutagenic properties of thalidomide, dated 6th February 1995.
