About this work

Description

The Northern Counties Association first met in Apr 1875 as a conference of MOHs from the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Durham and Westmorland at Newcastle Infirmary library. This meeting is recorded in minute book N.8/1. The Association was dissolved at the annual general meeting in Jul 1882, due to the "...apathy and indifference of the members, and their want of zeal and attention..." (N.8/1, p64). In Sep 1891 the Northern Branch was founded, in effect reviving the Northern Counties Association.

Annual reports in N.8/4-8, from 1920/21 to 1949/50, also contain reports of the Branch's Medical Officer sub-groups on Tuberculosis, Schools and Maternity and Child Welfare. They are not included in every annual report, and this was normally due to inactivity. Annual reports in N.8/8-9 also include reports of the Northern Sub-Group of the Society's County District Group, established in 1951. These continue up to 1958/59.

There are no records of the Northern Region in the archive.
