Card indexes

This section did not exist in the original list. It has been inserted in order to provide a classification for the series of card indexes to the papers now classified in/SA/ALR/A compiled by Jean Aitken Swan and her colleagues at the Institute of Medical Sociology. Some description of this will be found in the general introduction to Section A.

The card index functions as a calendar to the records rather than as a true index; the cards are arranged to correspond with the items on the files, giving the piece number, the date (if known) and further details, such as, in the case of a letter, who it is from, whom to, and a brief note of its nature and contents. Thus it cannot be used to locate at one glance all letters from a particular correspondent or all items on a particular subject. There is an outline index at the end of this section which provides a by no means exhaustive means of locating letters of certain individuals and items on certain topics.

The references refer to plastic index-card boxes: on the front of each box there is a label with the numbers of the items to which the cards inside relate. Not all items have been card indexed as can be seen from the reference numbers listed in this series.

The following abbreviations are used in the card index for various important officers and members of the association, and their allies in Abortion Law Reform.
