Biographical note
Project Summary:Difference - the biodiversity of humanity - is being challenged by developments in scientific theory, practice and culture. Impairments are gradually being removed from our visual culture as genetic and medical technologies develop. This project raises questions such as: ‘is enhancement the way forward?’; ‘is our society becoming a homogeneous landscape of ordinary bodies?’; and 'how do disabled people's bodies fit into current notions of ‘normality’?’ By recording the physical motions of 'abnormal bodies' using motion capture, the project blends technology and bioscientific debate to create a landmark catalogue of animated motions never before seen. By using a combination of animation, debate and exhibition, 'Motion Disabled: Disabled Motion' brings together disabled people and bioscientists in a gallery setting to create a path forward for each group based on respect and understanding.
