Hunter, John (1728-1793): lectures on surgery

"John Hunter's Lectures on the Principles of Surgery: taken by Dr. Babbington [recte Babington], Dr. Skeete & Mr. Fearon Surgeon". A note on the verso of the title page records that Babington, Skete and Fearon took the notes at James Thomton's lecture room and that a copy of them was then lent to the creator of this volume by Fearon's pupil James Stewart.

The volume is divided into two sections, separated by a block of blank pages, and was originally paginated in two distinct runs. William Babington (1756-1833), physician and mineralogist, trained at Guy's Hospital in the 1770s and was Physician to that institution from 1795 to 1811.

According to information found on the verso of the title page Henry Fearon (d.1803) was Surgeon to the Finsbury Dispensary. However, information received from a researcher in October 2013 casts doubt on this, as he seems to have spent the entire period between 1777 and his death in 1803 as surgeon and accoucher to the Surrey Dispensary. The pencil notes in this volume are the only known suggestion of a link between Fearon and the Finsbury Dispensary.

"Dr. Skeete" is probably Thomas Skeete F.R.C.P. (1757-1789), who died young shortly after being elected Physician to Guy's Hospital.
