war-devastated Angola orphaned, homeless children find shelter in wrecked buildings infested with malarial mosquitoes. There is no clean public water supply. The country's hospitals cannot cope with the physical and psychiatric casualties and there are distressing scenes in a children's ward where malnourished and wounded patients suffer from infections caught in the unhygienic conditions of the hospital. One tragic case history is followed to its inevitable end. The work of a traditional healing centre for psychiatric patients, the only optimistic aspect of the film, shows that traditional medicine survives to offer some relief in a situation of almost total breakdown.
