A small collection of documents on medical affairs signed by Napoleon Bonaparte, 1799-1814

1. Letter from Bonaparte to Hector Daure (1774-1846), 'ordinateur en chef', on the parlous condition of the military hospitals at Damietta, Egypt. Cairo, 14 pluviôse an VII [2 February 1799]. Signed 'Bonaparte'.

2. Patent of appointment of Jean Jacques Oleyn as 'médecin ordinaire de l'armée du Rhin'. Paris, 16 germinal an VIII [5 April 1800]. Signed 'Bonaparte'. Countersigned by Lazare Carnot (1753-1823), minister of war, and Hugues-Bernard Maret (1763-1839), secretary of state.

3. Patent of appointment of François Blondel as 'pharmacien de première classe de l'hôpital militaire' at La Rochelle. Paris, 4 thermidor an VIII [22 July 1800]. Signed 'Bonaparte'. Countersigned by Carnot and Maret.

4. Report by general Drouet, governor of Elba, to Napoleon, on medical provision on the island. Portoferraio, 31 July 1814. Annotated by Napoleon with instructions to re-supply the island's hospital, 1 August 1814. Signed 'Nap'.

Acquisition note

Documents 1 and 2 were purchased at Sotheby's, London, on 29 July 1925 (lot 210), and 8-10 June 1931 (lot 538), respectively (accs.67311 and 67529). Document 3 was purchased from Charavay, Paris, and 'found in the office' in January 1936 (acc.69223). Document 4 was purchased from Degrange, Paris, in September 1934 (acc.67117).
