About this work

Description

He is wearing a white dress, with a cigarette in his mouth; which a man is about to light; whilst a female nurse turns away. This is not a photograph of a small boy dressed as a girl, but of a teenager dressed as an infant: in the nineteenth century, all children under the age about five wore dresses. The actor shown here, Edward Garrett, was about fourteen years old at the time he appeared in the farce 'The little stranger', at the Criterion Theatre, London, in 1906, for which this card was published as publicity.
