About this work
Description
The Scientific Meetings series is composed of material related to the many scientific meetings, conferences, symposia, workshops, and discussions which Dr. Watson has attended throughout his career. The series primarily consists of correspondence between Dr. Watson and meeting organizers, as well as programs, itineraries, reports, and related reprints. Many files contains details regarding Watson’s travel arrangements. Watson served as chairman at numerous meetings and these files typically contain more detailed information pertaining to the event.
Of note are summaries of the Animal Virus meetings at Caltech in the 1950s, handwritten notes from Oak Ridge National Laboratory meetings (1955-1963), correspondence with Max Perutz regarding the 1961 International Biochemical Congress held in Moscow, correspondence regarding the formation of AMBO (Asian Molecular Biology Organization), and the initial discussions on sequencing the human genome (1980s).
The series does not contain meetings where Dr. Watson was featured as a lecturer. These can found in Personal Papers: Lectures, Speeches, Interviews (JDW/2/8). It does not include meetings and conferences held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, which can be found in Institutional Records (JDW/3). For meetings related to Recombinant DNA, see: Personal Papers: Subjects: Biohazards (Recombinant DNA) (JDW/2/7/5). For meetings related to the Human Genome Project, see: Personal Papers: Human Genome Project (JDW/2/9).The series is arranged chronologically by the date of the meeting.
