Biographical note

In 1975, the Home Office, in consultation with the Department of Health and Social Security, established a working party "to assemble information relating to marital problems and the provision of helping services". D. Woodhouse, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Martial Studies, was a member of the Working Party and had been an important force in its establishment. In 1979 it published a consultative report, entitled "Marriage Matters". The Home Office and Department of Health went on to seek comment from organisations in the field, particularly in relation to a proposal that central government should become involved in the development of services and research connected with marriage and marital problems.
